"Moslims, geef verdachten uit eigen kring aan"

De Amerikaan M. Osman Siddique, geboren in Bangladesh, is er trots op de eerste moslim-ambassadeur van de VS geweest te zijn, op de Fiji-eilanden. In The Washington Post roept hij zijn geloofsgenoten op zich actiever tegen het terrorisme uit eigen kring teweer te stellen. “Teveel Amerikaanse moslims weigeren zich publiekelijk uit te spreken tegen extremistische ideologieën die ons allemaal bedreigen, omdat ze bang zijn door hun geloofsgenoten gestigmatiseerd te worden vanwege hun samenwerking met de veiligheidsdiensten.”

“My pride in faith and country remain rock solid. But my real life American dream often feels more like a nightmare these days. Renegade members of my faith are committing horrendous acts of global terrorism, and I am left embarrassed and angry. I am embarrassed when I read the names of the terrorists in the newspaper. What must non-Muslims think when some criminal claiming to act in the name of Islam and bearing the same name as the Prophet Muhammad is arrested? I am also embarrassed that not all American Muslims do all they can to expose those in our community who would commit mayhem or would give succor in any way to those who would cause harm. Too many American Muslims hold back from publicly speaking out against extremist ideologies that threaten us all because they fear being stigmatized by their coreligionists for cooperating with security agencies.”

Osman Siddique spreekt zich tegelijkertijd uit tegen het “etnisch gericht” selecteren van verdachten (ethnic profiling) op luchthavens, waar zowel de VS als het Verenigd Koninkrijk toe neigen na recente arrestaties. Osman Siddique:

“I understand why this happens, so I put up with it. But imagine how such treatment feels to Muslims less sophisticated than I am in the needs of government? Is it any wonder that law-abiding Muslims are offended and recoil from cooperating in any manner?”

Toch is het de vraag welke omstandigheden moslims er het meest van weerhouden op te treden tegen gewelddadig extremisme uit eigen kring. Denis MacEoin, specialist in Perzische en Arabische cultuur, beschrijft in een uitvoerig gedocumenteerd artikel Why Do Muslims Execute Innocent People? in The Middle East Forum (herfst 2006) hoezeer radicalen hun intimiderende greep weten te houden op gewone moslims. MacEoin’s advies aan westerse regeringen is helder: steun de hervormers en dwing autoritaire regimes in het Midden-Oosten tot hervormingsprocessen binnen hun samenlevingen.

“What are the policy implications of this situation for Western countries, the U.N., and international human rights organizations? One is that they should give more genuine support to Muslim reformers, their conferences and publications, and, where appropriate, their teaching positions. Another is to pressure Islamic governments to make arrests when death threats and similar menaces are used instead of open argument. A recent Saudi doctoral thesis listed two hundred names of intellectuals who must be killed while, in May 2006, Osama bin Laden declared open season on all Muslim freethinkers. Neither the Saudi government nor the Islamic establishment elsewhere have moved to counter such provocations.”
