James C. Bennett: Anglo-centrisme laat "rest van Europa ver achter"

Denken veel Amerikanen dat de Verenigde Staten het centrum van het universum is, volgens James C. Bennett zal dat nog wel geruime tijd zo blijven ook. Bennett is voorzitter van The Anglosphere Institute, een studie- en lobbycentrum in de VS.

Bennett’s uitgangspunt is dat de VS, in alliantie met angelsaksische landen als het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Australië, het engelstalige deel van Canada, Nieuw-Zeeland en delen van de engels-geöriënteerde bevolking van India en de Caraïben, alles in zich hebben om het continentale Europa en andere werelddelen ver achter zich te laten. Deze stelling werkt Bennett uit in zijn recent verschenen boek The Anglosphere Challenge:

Coining the term anglosphere to describe a loose coalition based on a common language and heritage, James C. Bennett believes that traits common to America and other English-speaking nations – a particularly strong and independent civil society; openness and receptivity to the world, its people, and ideas; and a dynamic economy – have uniquely positioned them to prosper in a time of dramatic technological and scientific change. In a wide-ranging exploration back to the Industrial Revolution and into the future, The Anglosphere Challenge gives voice to a growing movement on both sides of the Atlantic.

Bennett’s Anglosphere is minder een geografisch en staatsrechtelijk omlijnd gebied, dan een fluctuerend geheel van cultuurgemeenschappen die verbonden zijn door, wat Bennett noemt, typisch angelsaksische waarden als een sterke en onafhankelijke civil society, openheid en ontvankelijkheid naar de bredere wereld, haar volkeren en ideeën, en een dynamische economie.

In een recensie van Keith Windschuttle wordt Bennett’s stelling niet bestreden, wel wezenlijk genuanceerd. Bennett’s vertrouwen steunt sterk weliswaar op hoopvolle, maar vooralsnog ongewisse effecten van de huidige technologische revolutie. Windschuttle wijst fijntjes op de achterliggende internet-boom, die uitdraaide op een dotcom-nachtmerrie. Ook miskent Bennett volgens Windschuttle de sterke gemeenschappelijkheid van de angelsaksiche wereld met de niet-Engelstalige landen en naties. Hoe het ook zij, ook Windschuttle is ervan overtuigd dat de Britse cultuur ook in de toekomst de sleutel tot succes zal vormen:

Whatever the outcome, The Anglosphere Challenge is one of the important books of our time. It establishes the centrality of British culture to the economic, technological, and political prospects of the world. The ancient traditions of the British — individual rights and responsibilities, minimal government, and a strong civil society — constitute the most reliable formula for a future that works. Even if that future turns out to be less confined to countries of British descent than Bennett predicts, it is highly likely still to be dominated by their cultural values and traditions.
