"Alliantie van Beschavingen"

In de nasleep van de aanslagen op 11/9 en de groeiende bezorgdheid over een mondiale clash of civilizations namen Spanje en Turkije in 2005 het initiatief tot de oprichting van een wereldwijde Alliantie van Beschavingen. Nog in hetzelfde jaar verwelkomde de voormalige Secretaris-Generaal Kofi Annan van de Verenigde Naties de Alliantie als een belangrijk initiatief om…

“to bridge divides and overcome prejudice, misconceptions, misperceptions, and polarization which potentially threaten world peace.”

Twee jaar later, zomer 2007, ging het officiële VN-orgaan Alliance of Civilizations daadwerkelijk van start. In het voorwoord van haar startdocument verwijst de Alliantie naar grote spanningen tussen de wereldreligies en tussen de verschillende geloofsgemeenschappen:

“Muslims sometimes complain that western governments are unfair in their treatment of Arab nations, when compared with preferential treatment given to Israel. Whilst acknowledging the technological superiority of the West, Muslims often condemn what they believe to be its moral decadence. From the other side, grievances are often expressed about Islamic countries – that human rights are frequently transgressed, that women are treated shabbily and that the Christian faith, and other non-Muslim faiths are discriminated against in Muslim lands. However, none of these grievances and opinions is of such nature that it is beyond resolution.”

De Alliantie focust op de terreinen onderwijs, jeugd, media en migratie. Respect, constructieve dialoog en wederzijds begrip vormen daarbij sleutelbegrippen. VN-Secretaris-Generaal Ban Ki-moon hoopt dat de Alliantie het werk van de Verenigde Naties kan versterken en schetst de urgentie:

“Across the world, intolerance and cross-cultural tensions are on the rise. Every day serves up new instances of the harmful impact cultural misunderstandings and religious prejudices can have on relations between communities, both within countries and across national borders. Indeed, many of today’s global challenges – though mostly political in nature – are aggravated and rendered intractable by the distrust, even hostility, among different cultural and religious groups.”

Op 18 januari 2008 vindt in Madrid de eerste jaarvergadering van de Alliantie plaats.
