Battle of Ideas

Voor de vijfde keer vindt in het weekend van 30 en 31 oktober in Londen het inspirerende festival Battle of Ideas plaats. Tientallen workshops, presentaties en debatten over actuele politieke, economische en maatschappelijke thema’s. Als smaakmakers vooraf publiceert een aantal auteurs prikkelende visies.

Zo bijvoorbeeld Bill Durodié, verbonden aan het Centre for Non-Traditional Security Studies te Singapore. Terwijl wereldwijd onmiskenbaar een machtsverschuiving gaande is ten gunste van opkomende Aziatische landen, wijst Durodié op vitale systeemfouten in deze regio, met name China:

“In fact, if Asia in general, and China specifically, are truly to realize the potential of their evident capacities, optimism and dynamism, it may only be once they have discovered and captured their own spirit of freedom. For now, it suits the elites there to point to Westerners’ own critiques of the failings of freedom and democracy with a view to justifying the continued existence of their narrowly managerial and hierarchical systems. There is certainly no lack of success in their technical achievements, but quite how long this can last without a broader engagement of the people and their passions remains to be seen.”

Dichter bij huis pleit Andrew Copson, voorzitter van de Britse Humanistische Vereniging, voor het afschaffen van met publieksmiddelen gefinancierde religieuze scholen:

“So called ‘faith’ schools are the legacy of laws first passed nearly seventy years ago, extended to non-Christian religions as the inevitable consequence of a recent tendency towards equal treatment which in other areas of public policy is laudable but in this area, makes for a more segregated future. Our children – who deserve a reformed, inclusive and accommodating community school system, with a curriculum fit for the twenty-first century – are let down by their continuing existence, and by our allowing it.”

Richard Sexton, werkzaam bij de Brise tak van PriceWaterhouseCoopers (tegenwoordig kortweg PWC), voor een nieuwe ondernemersethiek. Niet alleen transparantie, maar vooral authenticiteit moeten het verschil maken om het geschonden vertrouwen in de economie te herstellen:

“What’s needed is a new ‘responsibility agenda’ requiring business to embed the right culture and behaviours that can deliver both public trust and business success.”
