Portret van Fatema Mernissi, 70

Op het Australisch/Marokkaanse THE VIEW FROM FEZ (overgenomen van Martina Sabra van het Duitse Qantara) een mooi portret van Fatema Mernissi, Marokkaanse schrijfster en sociologe, die deze maand 70 wordt. Het artikel bevat een overzicht van haar creatieve en strijdvaardige leven, en beschrijft hoeveel positiefs zij verwacht van moderne media voor de ontwikkeling van Marokko en elders:

“She assumes that YouTube, Twitter and the like will lead to more democracy in Arab countries in the long run, because the powers that be will no longer have a monopoly on the most important resources in this regard: communication and information.”

Martina Sabra schrijft dat Mernissi ook aan een nieuw boek werkt met als werktitel: Why the West is Afraid of Islam:

”(...) a major new essay that is due to be published in English in the USA in 2011. The book is sure to cause a stir in the USA in the year that marks the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.”

Op haar officiële website vraagt Fatema Mernissa haar niet willekeurig en liefst nog op ‘t laatste moment uit te nodigen voor van alles en nog wat. Zelf werkt ze geconcentreerd – met tadbir – aan de vraag of a digitally-induced Arab renaissance realiteit kan worden of louter verbeelding is:

”(...)I invite you to connect with the Synergie Civique network, a group of friends and colleagues who help me clarify whether the futuristic trends of a digitally-induced Arab renaissance I have noticed, are sheer imagination or glimpses of an unexpected reality.”
